SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Nevada wildlife officials say they're dealing with a major fish die-off at a popular lake in a Sparks park.

Nevada Department of Wildlife fisheries biologist Chris Crookshanks says it appears thousands of trout, bass and catfish have died at Sparks Marina Park.

He says his agency began receiving reports of struggling fish at the 77-acre lake on Tuesday and more fish began washing up on shore on Saturday night.

Crookshanks says preliminary water testing shows low levels of oxygen near the cove and beach at the north end of Sparks Marina Lake where the die-off is concentrated.

According to the city of Sparks website, the lake is continuously recharged with fresh filtered water from an underground aquifer.

The city says the process produces a water quality that exceeds standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for recreational use, and the lake is monitored regularly to ensure excellent water quality.

With walking paths, trees and sandy beaches surrounding the urban lake, it's popular with walkers, joggers, fishermen and boaters.

Wildlife officials say the cleanup of dead fish and an investigation into the cause of the die-off will continue on Monday morning.
