YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) — A California man has been sentenced to 42 years to life in prison for strangling and robbing his 73-year-old grandmother in Nevada and burying her body in a relative's backyard.

Lyon County District Court Judge Leon Aberasturi sentenced 23-year-old James Masterson on Monday in Yerington.

The Nevada Appeal reports that District Attorney Bob Auer urged family members to speak at future parole hearings to ensure Masterson remains in prison.

Masterson was convicted in April of killing 73-year-old Peggy Herlacher in July 2010 in Silver Springs, about 50 miles east of Reno.

Authorities say Masterson transported Herlacher's body in the trunk of her car to his hometown of Riverbank, Calif., where he buried her.

Sheriff's investigators say Masterson stole his grandmother's jewelry and credit cards to support a heroin addiction.

Perhaps he will be placed in the general population and the other inmates will "take care" of him.
