RENO, Nev. (KRNV & -- A man has been sentenced to life without parole for a rash of local burglaries.

On Sept. 6, 2012, a jury found him guilty of 8 counts of Possession of Stolen Property, 2 counts of Burglary, and 1 count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

On Sept. 3, 2011, a Sparks resident came home to find a suspicious Dodge Durango with Katrina Smith at the wheel backed into her driveway. Later, it was revealed Smith was acting as a lookout while Ludwig was in the house stealing the victim’s property.

After fleeing from the house and running for several miles, the Sparks Police Department apprehended Ludwig when he was picked up by Smith. A witness who saw him running from the victim’s home was able to identify him based on his clothing which included a mock CSI Reno T-shirt. It was discovered that Ludwig had pried open the victim’s back door and taken approximately $20,000 worth of jewelry and other property from the home that he discarded throughout a rocky hillside as he fled. Both Smith and Ludwig were arrested for the burglary.

Upon searching Ludwig’s Durango, the police discovered stolen property from other residential burglaries that had occurred in the preceding months in Washoe County. They also found a recent receipt for a storage unit and its key in his vehicle. Believing there may be more stolen property in his storage unit, the police lawfully searched it. Inside, they found stolen property related to 15 other residential burglaries. These items included 9 firearms, electronic equipment, jewelry, antiques, silver collectibles, and over 100 watches. The value of the property recovered in the storage unit exceeded $25,000.

Ludwig’s criminal history spans nearly 20 years. He has 8 prior felony convictions.

Washoe County Clerk's Office says Julius Ludwig was sentenced today. Ludwig was arrested on Sept. 3, 2011 for burglarizing several homes in Reno and Sparks. He currently has 19 felonies.
