Sparks, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - According to Sparks Police a moviegoer shot himself in the buttocks while watching "The Bourne Legacy" at the Century 14 movie theater just before 9:00 p.m. on August 14, 2012.

Sparks police received several phone calls of shots being shot at the theater. Several police units responded as well as fire and medical personnel only to find out one shot was fired and by accident.

Sparks police say after the man shot himself, he stood up and apologized to the crowd in the theater, and then drove himself to the VA hospital. Police say there was no panic in the theater.

Police met the 56-year old man at the hospital to question him about the incident.

Officers say the man was cooperative and admitted that his gun fell out of his pocket and when it hit the floor it discharged.

The man has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon, according to authorities.

Police say the case will be forwarded to the City Attorney's Office for possible charges.

"The man has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon"...Maybes they should require more training to get the permit

Do we know what kind of gun it was? Any handgun that fires when it is dropped is absolutely defective and needs to be identified and recalled. For the sake of public safety, at least figure out what make/model this gun was.

A gun is still a gun. And how do we know what his mindset was? This could have gone badly. I think this is a dangerous scenario and it is a privilege to watch a movie in a theater not a fundamental right. If the gentleman felt threatened to be in a theater then he should have waited for the video. Hero daydreams and vigilantism are best left for the movies. Why would you have an unsecured firearm with the safety off in this situation? It is obviously dangerous and not very clear headed. If you choose to get a cwp you should be more thoughtful and aware of this responsibility and consequences than the average bear.

He's lucky he didn't kill an innocent bystander. Which is more likely than him needing it to save the day. My neighbor was there and said she damned near had a heart attack when the gun went off. Guns don't kill people, they just shoot them in the buttocks. And yes, we have guns, but I'm able to keep them out the hand of kids and crooks, and I don't go pack around a gun with the safety off in my cargo pants pocket. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if the theaters have to start checking the audience for weaponry before a movie starts in the future. The problem is too many idiots with guns, not too many guns.

No where in the article did they say the gun was unholstered. It fell. Actually, through all of my training for work & for my conceal weapon (also known as a CCW)....  Everyt instructor and/or police officer said to carry with one in the chamber (with the safety on, of course). When poo hits the fan & you need to use your weapon... You don't have time for "Excuse me, Mr. Bad Guy, can you wait a min so I can load my gun?".  The only law that refers to not being allowed to have one in the chamber when carrying has to do with rifles and shotguns (NRS-503.165). Unless I missed something in the Nevada conceal gun laws. Ultimately its at the owners discretion.

He should be fully prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law ! A unholstered gun with one in the chamber is completely against all gun safty rules and CW permit holder laws ! He shot himself in the brain and was lucky there was nothing there to damage !

It's not like he wilfully discharged his gun with intent, this was a case of "accident". He is lucky, that no one was injured but himself. I can clearly understand people today are so afraid to go anywhere anymore. We take our lives into our hands when we simply go to a movie theatre now day's.I hope there aren't going to be any charges filed against him.
