GALT, Calif. (AP) — Sacramento County authorities say a gunman suspected of shooting and killing a police officer in Galt before killing himself was not involved in a reported burglary.

Sacramento County sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos said Wednesday that Galt police officer Kevin Tonn was killed Tuesday morning while crossing paths with an armed man who also happened to be in the area while responding to a call about a burglary.

The 35-year-old Tonn was fatally shot during a physical altercation with the suspect. The gunman, whose name has not been released, fired several shots at another officer before shooting and killing himself.

Initial reports had indicated that the gunman was possibly tied to the burglary.

But Ramos said Wednesday that the burglary suspect has been identified. He is related to a resident who owns the property where the burglary was reported.

His name has not been released.
