SAN FERNANDO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff's officials say a man was shot and killed by San Fernando police after trying to attack an officer with a tree branch.

In a statement, Deputy Peter Gomez says officers were called to respond to a possible battery Thursday morning when they encountered the man wielding a baseball bat-sized branch.

Gomez says the man tried to hit an officer with the branch, but missed, hitting the patrol car instead.

Gomez says an officer tried to use a Taser to stop the man, but it wasn't effective because the suspect was wearing too many layers of clothes.

He says the man was shot after approaching the officer again. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Sheriff's Departments and other agencies are investigating.
