RENO, Nev. (AP) — A mother bear and a cub were fatally struck by a car near Reno, and wildlife officials are searching for a surviving cub.

Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Chris Healy says one of the cubs died at the scene while the mother bear and other cub left after the collision Thursday night on old Highway 40 in the town of Verdi just west of Reno.

After also being hit by the car, the mother wandered about 200 yards away with the other cub and laid down under a tree behind an abandoned house.

Wildlife officials found the mother dead with the cub on top of her body on Friday morning, and were trying to capture the cub when it ran off toward a mountainside next to an old Verdi neighborhood.

Healy says officials left the mother's body in place in hopes of capturing the cub there Saturday.

people speed through Verdi, and are clueless about wildlife crossing the road. fruit tree and the need to get to the river are a factor Subtract 3 more bears from the sportsman's 'hit list'

Animal Ark is a nice facility (I read in another report this is where they will take the cub if captured). I hope they are successful as the cub will likely die without its mom. :(
