RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Nevada Highway Patrol responded to 92 vehicle crashes between 10 a.m. on Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday in northern Nevada.
The majority of the accidents occurred in the greater Reno-Sparks area.
33 of the accidents involved injuries.
"A lot of people that were not seat belted in some of these very minor accidents sustained minor injuries, their head struck the windshield for example. So seat belts, slowing down, keeping a safe following distance, and just paying attention will just greatly minimize the chance of an unplanned event," NHP Trooper Chuck Allen says.
Most of the crashes happened late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
Thursday morning proved to be challenging for drivers as roads proved to be even more icy and slick than the morning before.
The most serious incident on Thursday morning happened around 4 a.m.
According to NHP the accident happened on Interstate 80 near Reno near the Victorian Ave. interchange. A male motorist driving a white Dodge pickup was traveling east bound when he lost control and spun out and his vehicle ended up facing the wrong way. Not long after the Dodge was struck by another vehicle. The two vehicles stuck in the road way blocked one lane of traffic. While the two drivers were outside their vehicles another driver was unable to slow down in time upon approaching the crash and struck the driver of the Dodge pickup. The driver sustained serious leg injury and was transported to Renown Medical Center.
Trooper Allen cautions drivers to be careful if they exit their vehicle after a crash and always make sure there is a barrier between them and oncoming traffic.
Trooper Allen says as a safety reminder motorists need to increase following distance, reduce speed, and plan for more time to get to destination while wet and icy conditions continue.
