Discourage people from eating out by imposing a tax on food over 500 calories? Maybe a more immediate problem are out of control Southern Nevada loose cannon legislators (much in the news lately) whose embarassing proposals have made the national news. Sounds more like a "no amount of government is too much" California lawmaker than a member of the State of Nevada Assembly.

(4 responses thus far) Y doesn't the article state that containers is how the "fast food" designation is made (Huh, NV4?) i live near Keystone/80 and fast-food garbage is all over, locals like to toss at certain intersections and in most parking lots. Tax that! An increase ("tick up" is silly, NV4!) of a nickel ain't much and might help people (including "tourists") get to a clinic or prevention fair, it is chump change for most hospitals, who "tax" underinsured patients and don't reign in overrun costs. It's fun to see folks in scrubs outside Renown puffin' on cancer sticks. the Indians get the last laugh on us, anything to discourage this is good.

THIS BILLS TURNS HOSPITALS INTO "FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS" BY DEFINITION AND DOES NOT HELP THEM! Please keep in mind that hospitals, such as UMC, serve food in their cafeterias that are in wraps and disposable containers for immediate consumption. This is due to the fact that as a public hospital there is a lower cost and also disposable does lower the possibility of passing infections that could occur with reusable plates and glasses, etc due to the high volume of visitors and patients. Please think about this bill and all the areas it might impact. Our public hospital has to use these materials in its public cafeteria and the public we serve at UMC cannot afford additional taxes just because of the containers the food is in. Most are there waiting for family members to recover and the last thing they need is a "fast food tax" there. Many are Medicaid and Medicare recipients. Many are hospital staff that only have a few minutes to get food and go back to the floor. Many balanced meals, salads and sandwiches are served at UMC cafeteria. It is not a McDonalds. It just happens to serve its food in containers that would then qualify it as a "fast food restaurant" So you can go to Red Lobster and eat 3000 calories without a tax or eat at a hospital cafeteria because you are waiting on a loved one and you will pay the tax at the hospital all because of the container. THIS DOES NOT HELP HOSPITALS!

Raising the cost of cigarettes and taxing cigarettes has not made people stop smoking, so what makes This moron think that taxing fast food is going to make a difference? If he's going to try to tax fast food, based on how many calories are in it, he would have to tax regular restaurants as well if they have something on the menu that's over 500 calaries. That would ruin everybody's businesses.

Oh, please!!! Not everybody eats fast food for the fun of it. In fact, many people with limited income find it cheaper to buy fast food than to cook themselves! And what about those on road trips and vacations who need to stop for a meal? Can we say, "how to prevent tourists from coming to Nevada?" This ranks in the top 10 of the most stupid ideas yet!!
