CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Troubled Nevada Assemblyman Steven Brooks has pulled out of an agreement to take medical leave following his arrest for allegedly threatening the Assembly speaker and a subsequent hospitalization for a mental evaluation.

Assembly Democratic leaders announced Brooks' change of heart at a news conference Tuesday after Brooks refused to sign an agreement to take an extended leave.

Assembly Majority Leader William Horne says Brooks indicated he is well enough to serve in the Legislature and plans to do so.

Horne and Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick say Brooks will be expected to fulfill his legislative duties.

The Assembly will move ahead with plans to appoint a select committee to investigate Brooks' behavior and recommend whether any action should be taken against him, including possible expulsion.

roseanya---There is so much fail in your reply it is shocking. "Illness does not disable the entire mind." Yes mental illness does, in fact, disable the entire mind. He is mentally ill, he is incapable of making rational decisions. "There is no known reason that Mr. Brooks cannot perform as a Legislator." He threatened to kill the Democrat Assembly Speaker.......a member of his own party. They have thrown him out of the Democrat caucus. I'd say those are some pretty good reasons why he can't be an effective legislator. "Might even be an improvement over some of the short-term thinking that's rather usual there." No, it will simply be an ever present distraction for the next 115 days of this legislative term. How about we raise our standards for our elected representatives rather than always lowering them???

I disagree with other commenters. We all face stress, sooner or later, sometimes severe stress. We don't ALWAYS make the best choices, the best decisions. Illness does not disable the entire mind. There is no known reason that Mr. Brooks cannot perform as a Legislator. Might even be an improvement over some of the short-term thinking that's rather usual there.

Think Brooks will get a little extra attention at the security checkpoints each morning??? Perhaps he'll tire of the full body cavity checks every day. Democrat Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick may need full time bodyguards to protect her from someone in her own party. Hilarious! Thank you North Las Vegas........flushing this state down the toilet one mentally ill, violent representative at a time.
