GOLCONDA, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- A man was stopped on Interstate 80 near mile marker 222 by a Winnemucca Police Officer on Oct. 23 around 3pm. Shortly after the officer made contact with the driver, the driver took off and refused the officer's demands, according to Humboldt County Sheriff's Office. He then drove westbound on I-80 toward Winnemucca.
After leading officers on car chase on Interstate 80, the driver exited the Interstate in Golconda and opened fire at a Winnemucca Police Officer and two other law enforcement personnel, according to Humboldt County Sheriff's Office. Washoe County Sheriff's Office reports he also hit two patrol vehicles. Shrapnel struck and injured a K9 who was in a kennel inside one of the patrol vehicles.
The officers then returned fire and subsequently killed the man. No officers were harmed.
Detectives from the Regional Officer-Involved Shooting Team in Reno were requested to assist in the investigation by the Sheriff of Humboldt County. The exact identity of the suspect is not known at the time.
