PORTOLA, Cal. (KRNV & – Just after midnight Sunday morning a Plumas County Sheriff Deputy responded to Eastern Plumas Health Care following a report of a patient causing a disturbance.

Plumas County Sheriff-Coroner Gregory Hagwood tells News 4 the deputy was confronted by a 53-year-old white male adult. A violent struggle ensued which resulted in the deputy using deadly force. The suspect died at Eastern Plumas Health Care. The name of the suspect will not be released until the family is notified.

The deputy has been placed on routine paid administrative leave as is customary in this type of incident.

Sheriff-Coroner Hagwood says within hours of the incident, unidentified members of the Portola community made “menacing and threatening statements” to the law enforcement community. Hagwood says, “this behavior is despicable and reflects very poorly on those individuals and should be discouraged.”

Sheriff-Coroner Hagwood says the Department of Justice is conducting an investigation in conjunction with the Plumas County District Attorney’s office into the incident.
