RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - During the evening hours of Saturday December 17, 2011 the Reno Police Department Traffic Division will be administering a DUI checkpoint in the University Area of Reno. This checkpoint will be a multi-agency partnership with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, Sparks Police Department, Washoe County School Police, UNR Police Department, and the Douglas and Lyon County Sheriff’s Offices.
Costs for this DUI checkpoint are being paid for by a grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, Joining Forces Program. The purpose of the program is to educate the driving public in regards to DUI laws, to enforce the community’s no tolerance stance towards impaired driving and to remind people that “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving!”
Historically, the holiday season brings an increase of illegally impaired drivers to the nation’s roadways. This typically causes an increase in accidents involving DUI drivers during this time.
Please remind your audience that if they are drinking any amount of alcohol they shouldn’t drive. There are a number of options available to them to avoid driving while they are impaired or “buzzed”, such as using a designating a sober driver, public transportation or a taxi service.
All media outlets are invited to join us at the checkpoint. Please contact SGT Jim Stegmaier for further information.
