RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV)

An alternative headache treatment program is prevalent to northern Nevada for the first time.

Renown Institute for Neurosciences Dr. John Rothrock says 30% of migraine patients do not react to standard medication or treatments.

Now, Headache Rescue Rooms for Headache Clinic Patients are available to with as little as a 15 minute notice.

“Our mantra now is improve clinical outcomes, improve patient satisfaction (and) decrease costs,” says Rothrock.

When self-administered medications fail, the rescue rooms are available twice a month for each patient.

“You get fast tracked into a specialty clinic, seen by people who already know you to receive migraine specific therapies.”

Alternative medications offered here include experimental and injectable treatments.

“We tend to have on hand therapies that are more specific to migraine,” says Rothrock. “Not simply pain medication.”

These rooms are also designed to cut patients expenses.

Renown says a migraine related emergency room visit can cost $2,000 while a trip to the institute averages less than $100.
