PLYMOUTH, Calif. (AP) -- A rapidly spreading wildfire in Northern California has forced the evacuation of about 700 homes.

State fire spokeswoman Lynn Tolmachoff says evacuation orders were expanded Saturday to cover residences in and around River Pines Estates in Amador County.

Since Friday, the fire has destroyed five homes and seven outbuildings near vineyards in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

The 2-square-mile blaze is only 20 percent contained and is moving away from the vineyards. It's racing east, pushed by 20 mph wind gusts as it devours oaks, pines and waist-high grass.

Hundreds of firefighters are working in rugged terrain and triple-digit temperatures.

Tolmachoff says authorities are calling in a giant DC-10 air tanker to help in the fight.
