(AP & CNN) - One of the deputies injured in Tuesday's shootout believed to be with ex-LAPD officer Christopher Jordan Dorner has died.

Authorities say a gunfight with a man believed to be a fugitive ex-LA cop began when state game wardens confronted him in the San Bernardino Mountains.

U.S. Forest Service spokesman John Miller says the battle started at 12:42 p.m. Tuesday, which is about 20 minutes after a vehicle was reported stolen nearby.

Miller says that after the initial exchange of gunfire with the wardens, there was a second exchange with sheriff's deputies, two of whom were wounded, one of those deputies has died.

(CNN) - "I don't think that there's any conceivable way that he could slip away this time," Jay Obernolte, mayor of the city of Big Bear Lake, said in an interview with CNN.

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a fugitive ex-Los Angeles police officer is barricaded in a cabin in the Southern California mountains.

Someone in the Big Bear Lake area reported a stolen vehicle Tuesday and described the suspect as looking very similar to Christopher Dorner. The vehicle was found and the person ran into the forest and barricaded himself inside a cabin.

Authorities say a short time later there was an exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and the suspect.  Two law enforcement officers are being airlifted to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Cabin where Dorner is believed to be hiding
LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Two sheriff's deputies have been wounded in a shootout with a suspect believed to be renegade ex-Los Angeles police officer Christopher Jordan Dorner, a high-ranking law official with knowledge of the investigation said Tuesday.

Dorner had stolen a vehicle from a house in the Big Bear area when he came upon a police roadblock, the source said. Dorner opened fire on the deputies and later was pinned down, the source said.

Dorner is accused of killing one police officer and wounding two others, as well as killing the daughter of his police union representative and her fiancé.

UPDATE: For a short time, smoke was pouring from the home where Dorner is believed to be hiding.  The smoke was believed to be a signal from law enforcement of which cabin to target.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A law enforcement official says a person believed to be the fugitive ex-Los Angeles cop sought in three killings has exchanged gunfire with authorities in the San Bernardino Mountains.

The officer requested anonymity because the officer was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

The officer tells The Associated Press it's believed Christopher Dorner committed a residential burglary of a cabin and had a couple tied up in the cabin. One was able to get away and make a call.

Authorities responded to the location and gave chase Tuesday when Dorner fled in a stolen car. Gunfire was exchanged.

Both types of rants (kill him! & he's a martyr)are stupid. best example of what goes around comes around is when in '74 S.D.PD and FBI incinerated the remains of the Symbionese Liberation Army. Did anyone really expect another result? back to skiiing...

If he's desperate enough to kill police officers, he probably wouldn't hesitate to kill a innocent person if he was cornered, or on a desperate run. So even if its a remote possibility he'd Kill a innocent citizen, He should be arrested and locked away. Every filthy criminal deserves certain rights like a fair trial. I know my friends in no NV disagree with me, cause bullets only cost .50 cents but it we must answer chaos with swift and proper justice. My heart goes out to the people he's hurt and the police officer who died. I know that that god reserved a special place in heaven for the brave.

Saying the LAPD is corrupt is like saying that the sun is bright. It's been well known that it's one of the more corrupt police departments in the United States, think about how many riots have occured in LA... On that note, this guy is still a pile and a hypocrit, considering he's going after family members of officers. Just because you're a family member of an officer of the law doesn't mean you have the same opinions views or ideals as that family member, in fact you might completely disagree with their philosophy of life, yet still being targeted because you're related... This guy deserves death just as badly as any cop guilty of corruption does. If he wanted to do something right he could have secretly documented the corruption (seeing as how he would be able to get into meetings and such), and then expose it after collecting enoguh evidence, ruining the system from within. Instead he's caused the public to lose even MORE rights and freedom in the name of 'security' against 'domestic terrorism.' What an idiot.
