RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- Reno Fire and other agencies are battling a structure fire in south Reno.

Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said they received the call of an activated fire alarm at around 7:30 p.m. at the Pacific Cheese factory in the 8900-block of Double Diamond Parkway. When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the doors of the building. Fire crews on the roof punched holes into the building to ventilate the fire.

Chief Hernandez said the fire was contained to the packaging unit on second floor of the building, which is filled with product and boxes. Preserving the product was one of the main concerns in fighting the blaze.

"One, we're gonna try and ensure that we keep as much as their product viable," said Hernandez. "We're making sure that refrigeration units are contained and sealed, and we don't tamper with that, and they're not contaminated in any way, but our number one concern is ensuring that there is no more fire or fire spread."

Chief Hernandez also said they are rotating crew members every 20 minutes for the safety of the firefighters, due to how much smoke is inside the building and the hot temperatures outside.

Reno Fire expects to be working most of the night.

All employees that were working at the time were evacuated, and no one was injured.
