CARSON CITY, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- A middle school teacher's aide has been arrested and charged for alleged sexual offenses with a 14-year-old male student in Carson City.
Stephanie Mariskanish, 28, faces four Category-B felony counts and the possibility of 4-24 years in prison, if found guilty.
Mariskanish worked at Eagle Valley Middle School as a teacher’s aide for students with special needs. She was arrested by Carson City Sheriff’s Deputies on Friday, and the incident report obtained by News 4 suggests Mariskanish knew what she was doing.
As deputies cuffed Mariskanish, she told her father why she was being arrested, saying, "I did some sexual stuff with a kid…" and “I knew what I was doing...", according to the incident report.
In that same report, Mariskanish allegedly had four sexual encounters with a 14-year-old male student between February 1 and March 30. All of the sexual offenses occurred in her home at an apartment complex on the 1000-block of South Roop Street, according to Carson City Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger. Mariskanish is charged four times, once for each time she was with the boy sexually.
"They are each a Category B felony, which carry a term of 1-6 years in prison," said Krueger. "[And] a fine of up to $5,000."
Witness statements show Mariskanish was caring for a friend's child, who invited other students to her home. That is where the teacher's aide allegedly gave them alcohol and started a sexting relationship with the male student.
Krueger said "sexual conduct" is a broad term in the eyes of the law. "It basically covers every sexual act." However, News 4 learned from the incident report that Mariskanish and the boy's relationship involved unclothed touching in the genital areas, once involving ejaculation.
Mariskanish was relieved of her duties as a teacher's aide sometime in late January or early February, when the school's principal reported her to investigators after the student claimed she put her hands down his pants.
Krueger said Marikanish will have 15 days from her arraignment to seek trial at a preliminary hearing.
Carson City School Superintendent Richard Stokes, issued this statement to News 4 on Tuesday:
"Carson City School District was informed by the District Attorney’s Office on Friday, May 23 that an Eagle Valley Middle School Paraprofessional, Stephanie Mariskanish, had been arrested on four counts of Sexual Conduct with a Pupil. The District Attorney’s Office further explained that the student in question attended the school at which Ms. Marskanish worked and that each count occurred at Ms. Mariskanish’s apartment. The alleged action of our employee violates the highest level of trust between a school employee and the families we serve. The District will take swift action in this case and will cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies."
