RENO, Nev. (Mynews4.com & KRNV) - "People are seeing it and it is grabbing their attention." Ian Braunschneider is one of seven UNR Orvis School of Nursing students who put together a video on YouTube called Reno Homeless. The video is part of a project the students began at the beginning of the semester. Assistant Professor Salli Vannucci explains how the project objective is to study a vulnerable population such as the homeless or mentally ill, and use the nursing process to find an intervention to help.
Students say they spent about a month interviewing people in the community, compiling data and using the information in the video. "That's one big thing with nursing we educate. Whether we are in the community or in the hospital we're educating," says Nancy Arredondo, a member of the group.
"They kept telling us the way we could help was to promote awareness," said Braunscheider. So that's what they did. The video has more than 550 hits on YouTube and is spreading on Facebook.
The project has gone beyond earning the group an "A." Sandy Isham over at Volunteers of America Family Shelter says they used the video during a presentation earlier this week and it had enough of an impact to on one business that they donated money. "Dickson Realty made a very generous donation to help make sure that all of the Christmas wishes of all of the children here at the family shelter will be taken care of. We really appreciate that," said Isham.
