RENO, Nev. (Mynews4.com & KRNV) - This Saturday, nearly 18,000 Nevadans will lose their long-term unemployment benefits. Congress failed to grant an extension to the program that provides long term unemployment benefits before going on recess.

Congress is split on whether to continue this program for another year, or let it lapse because of the cost. Many Republicans do not want to grant an extension. They believe ending benefits will force recipients to find work. Democrats argue the jobless numbers show that long-term unemployment remains at an unprecedented high since the 1950's.

Even though it is the day after Christman, the Nevada Job Connect office was busy. Unemployment rates across the nation, including here in Nevada, are easing a bit.
But the long-term unemployment numbers remain stubbornly high.

Mark Vance has been looking for a job for five months, and he says the job market is very tough right now. "It's an employer's market. They can pick and choose, and that makes it real hard for somebody in my age bracket."

Vance has not been receiving unemployment at all. He is living off his wife's salary, which is a quarter of what he used to make.
