RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- The University of Nevada School of Medicine's Wellness and Weight Management Clinic is celebrating its tenth year serving the public.

For some, the thought of losing weight is no more than a forgotten New Year's resolution or a quick fix to prepare for summer, but for some of the millions of Americans struggling with obesity, it is a life long battle that's hard to fight. Thanks to a small group of people at UNR, some patients get a second shot at a healthy life.

About two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Since 1990, American obesity rates have only gone up. To help fight against obesity, the University of Nevada opened the doors of the Wellness and Weight Management Clinic ten years ago.

Karmella Thomas is a registered dietitian and the Clinic Coordinator, who said that in addition to the confusing maze of the internet and diet fads galore, working with a registered dietitian is crucial for losing weight. "What we work with patients on is what fits into their current lifestyle and making small changes that over time work into big changes. The programs are very structured, and all of us here have credentials that back us as being nutrition experts."
Since its inception, hundreds of people have lost weight, thanks to help from the clinic's staff. They use a unique meal replacement program, which is the most successful evidenced-based medical weight-loss program in the country.

"What happens is patients tell other people," said Thomas. "That just makes them want to come into a place that isn't based up on the latest fad diet, isn't based on a supplement, but based on basics and things that support people."

Thomas also said that while the idea of losing weight can be daunting to those who have struggled their whole lives, it all starts with a simple phone call. "Just make the phone call, there's no expectation but your own. We're here to help you meet your goal."
