Tahoe City, CA (Mynews4.com & KRNV) -The chair lifts are not spinning at Alpine Meadows. The resort has not opened yet but the community has already been rocked by tragedy. Annalise Kjolhede was pronounced dead Wednesday from injuries received during a skiing accident at the resort on November 10, 2012.
Annalise Kjolhede was an employee at Alpine Meadows in Kids’ Camp. She had only worked at the resort for one season but she was known by many.
In a statement released by Alpine Meadows, Spokesperson Jenny Kendrick writes: “Her outgoing personality, passion for working with kids and friendly nature will be remembered and missed by all of her friends and colleagues here at Squaw and Alpine.”
This week a number of blogs and websites started popping up discussing the accident. One article on a website called Caring Bridge reads: “This post is from Annalise's mom…”
The post describes what happened on Saturday. It says Annalise was skiing with two friends when she “fell and hit a submerged rock.” It says Annalise was wearing a helmet but received injuries to her head and neck.
Alpine Meadows Ski Patrol was conducting pre-season training the day of the accident. Spokesperson Jenny Kendrick says they were able to reach Annalise within 20 to 25 minutes. She was taken by Careflight to Reno.
A post on the Caring Bridge blog from Tuesday November 13, at 9:41p.m. reads: “Annalise has been declared clinically brain dead. Our angel has passed and gone to heaven.”
Even though Alpine Meadows is not open yet many people have been taking advantage of early snow storms, earning their turns hiking up and riding down the mountain. The resort is on Forest Service land. It is open to the public but Alpine Meadows is able to regulate use.
There are now signs up that say “Ski Resort Closed. No hiking, skiing or riding.” Anyone coming to the resort to hike or ride will be turned away. Those signs were not up on the day of the skiing accident.
Spokesperson Jenny Kendrick says the sings are not related to the skiing accident but rather for safety reasons as the resort completes construction in order to be ready to open on December 7, 2012.
