FACT FINDER: Some WCSD employees paid to stay home

RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - In a time when every dollar is stretched thin, News 4 is trying to find-out how much money the Washoe County School District is spending to put people on paid administrative leave and why. Information obtained exclusively by News 4 shows $555 are being paid out from the school district every day to have people stay home from work.

After the Lemmon Valley Elementary School principal was placed on administrative leave for unknown reasons, News 4 put in a request to the school district to find out how many other employees are currently placed on administrative leave, and how much those people are being paid for not working.

Just a few minutes ago a district spokesperson said they have four employees currently on administrative leave - with a combined salary of $202,615. So that works out to about $555 a day being wasted - which to put in perspective means they are basically throwing away an iPad every single day, and the real kicker is that the District will not tell you the taxpayer why these people are on administrative leave or even who they are - saying giving out that information is against policy.

Since we've started asking questions several viewers have weighed in on facebook. Brandi for example says, "secrets do not make parents feel better. Give us something! You don't have to spill all the beans, but for Pete's sake, give us something!"

On the other side there's Sri who writes, "I have two children there and I've never had a problem with her or felt my children were mistreated by her in any way. There is no reason to drag her name through the mud when nobody knows what happened."

We here at News 4 we want you to know we agree with Sri, there is no reason or attempt by News 4 to drag this Principal's name through the mud.

In fact, it's possible she may be on administrative leave for an innocent, simple reason, we'd love to report that and move on, but when the Washoe County School District won't give parents or taxpayers any information, is the public just supposed to trust at everything's on the up-and-up with kids safety on the line?

Actually people do have a right to know why a principal was put on leave. The ones who are bullying are those at WCSD who refuse to state whether the leave was as a result of misconduct (of course it was or it wouldn't be called administrative leave). The problem is that despite assurances to yours truly they had copies of the court case and were going to do a follow-up report, they have NOT done so to date. This was over two weeks ago they were going to do a report on this. WCSD told them to back off I am sure. Gangsters operate with more openness than does a school district.

Channel 4 krnv is just trying to become the Fox News of Reno. The same bullying tactic that the national Fox News uses. They have no desire for the facts or anybody's well being.

I provided a link elsewhere to a court case that mentioned Kara White as a defendant, and I also emailed News 4 the link to the case that is most likely the reason this person is on paid administrative leave. It is public information, and there is a lot of supporting documentation of what Kara White likely did to earn a suspension from the school district although she should have been FIRED. (As I know from personal experience, principals at WCSD aren't typically fired but are moved around--exception being Andrew Stansberry only because the media notified the district of his embezzlement conviction.) White is likely being punished for trying to engineer the firing of teacher on false allegations--very common at WCSD and other school districts in the country. Unfortunately for White, this teacher had an outside attorney willing to go to bat for her. I only wish I had been fortunate enough to have a lawyer go to bat for me and sue the district in its wrongful termination of me five years ago; I would be in far better financial shape today. It's "innocent until proven guilty." Unless, of course, you are a teacher who is kicked to the curb and put on unpaid leave so the district can starve you into settling for a pittance on what they call "settlements." These "settlements" are the same thing as severance packages in the private sector, only an attorney likely gets a big cut of the measly 10 grand you get if you are actually dumb enough to take it. Uncle Same takes a big chunk of the rest. You may wind up with one month's pay. I never would settle when the district wrongfully fired me five years ago over basically nothing because I felt a resignation was an admission of guilt. To hell with that.

Law enforcement has a similar practice for departmental investigations. Are we mad at them also? I suspect the fact finder team is frustrated with WCSD for not allowing them to close the Kara White story, and digging for whatever dirt they can so their viewers put pressure on the district.

This is what i have been saying all along. What are the schools spending the money they are already getting on. and now they want to tax us more. i'm all for the schools. But until the public know where the money is going i'm not supporting any more wastful spending.

When administrative leave is necessary (disciplinary process?), there still must be productive work these people can do. Even clerical and support functions would be helpful. What about lunch room duty? Teachers are always stressing about so many things that need to be done....
