SPARKS, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Some tense moments unfolded in Sparks on Thursday morning, as police said a lone gunman fired 100 rounds from a motel balcony.

News 4's photographer Kausik Bhatka turned on his camera as officers began arriving to the scene. The videotape captured the sounds of gunfire penetrating the darkness around 4 a.m.

The video shows it is hard to tell where the shots are coming from, but you can hear the gunfire is from a semi-automatic weapon.

Police said it was someone at the Motel 6 who provided the critical information that allowed them to identify where the shots were coming from, and eventually find the suspect. They said that information led them to Room 214, where 34-year-old Luis Machado was randomly firing guns from his second-story balcony.

Authorities said he initially ignored their commands and fired off a volley of shots at officers. Machado gave up peacefully, after an officer returned fire.

Based on the location of the room and the balcony, police said it was a miracle no one got hurt. Officers found two semi-automatic handguns, which included .40-caliber and .45-caliber handguns. They also found an AR15-style .223-caliber assault rifle. "I don't know what his intent was, but the miracle is, the freeway, I-80 is right there," said Sparks Police Sargent Charlie Alt. "He could have picked off any of the cars heading in either direction or hit a car going off or on the ramp. I mean he had a view of everything."

Machado was taken away by ambulance. Police said he received minor cuts from broken glass. However, they added he was admitted to the hospital due to irregular vital signs.

Machado will face a number of charges once he is released from the hospital. Deputy Chief Brian Miller said officers found trafficking amounts of drugs in Machado's motel room and they suspect Machado was under the influence. "That is a definate possibility that he was under the influence of drugs. I can't tell you what but by his behavior and what we found in the room, there's a strong indication of that."

Authorities say Machado is from Carson City. Sheriff Ken Furlong confirms Machado has had contact with his agency on drug-related charges, but the last contact was six years ago.

I-80 was closed in both directions during the incident, but police said there is still a chance a vehicle traveling on the Interstate between 4 and 4:30 a.m. may have been hit by a bullet. Detectives are asking anyone who believes their car was hit by a bullet to contact them.
