RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- A state board is authorizing the Department of Corrections the use of $2.2 million to pay for unexpected inmate medical costs.

The funds for these costs were approved Tuesday by the State Board of Examiners. Prison officials say several inmates have had catastrophic medical cases over the last two years that were not anticipated in the budget approved by lawmakers in 2013.

The funding request now goes to the legislature's Interim Finance Committee.
