RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) --40 students were recognized early Friday morning in the annual "Breakfast of Champions" at Vaughn Middle School.

Ginny Knowles, the Principal of Vaughn Middle School, says the students were nominated by teachers and counselors. Friday morning, the students received a special certificate and a medal for their academic achievement. Mrs. Knowles also says the children were selected for the award after overcoming life obstacles.

"Students come to school today with major issues they have to cope with and deal with that the kids 20 years ago didn't have to deal with. We are so proud of our students who have overcome major circumstances and obstacles in their lives," says Mrs. Knowles.

Herb Santos Jr. was the keynote speaker and also handed out Bighorn prizes.
