RENO, Nev. (Mynews4.com & KRNV) -- Barbara Clark will continue as Washoe County School Board President, after being the only person nominated on Tuesday.

The election took a surprising turn, as one of the trustees backed out of the race during public comment, and it may be connected to the heated race for Reno mayor. Instead of running for School Board President, Trustee Dave Aiazzi removed himself and nominated incumbent President Barbara Clark.

"I am ready to take up the charge as President. Ready, but not willing," Aiazzi said. "I thought Barbara Clark did a great job last year. It doesn't matter to me that much who the President of the school district, apparently not as much as other people think it's important."

People who Aiazzi says contacted his fellow trustees to oppose his election. "I don't know for a fact what they entailed, as alas, not one person possessed the courage to call me directly."

Complaints that Aiazzi says are directly related to his possible run for Reno mayor. "To this end, I am taking my name out of the running to be your president. I thank you for the support you've all shown me. It has also made me realize that while we as trustees would not use an election cycle to politicize the district, others have no such qualms."

He says he hasn't decided yet if he will run for mayor, and the decision to not run for School Board President was an easier one. "The same thing happened last year when we picked the President, so it didn't surprise me. But it's just, I want to do what's best for the school district and this is the right thing to do."
