RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- A mandatory status hearing scheduled Monday for the man accused of torturing, maiming and killing several dogs at a Reno motel has been postponed until next month.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office said 24-year-old Jason Brown is still in custody, but has been taken off the booking website, because he is considered to be a suspect in a high profile case.

Brown is accused of six felony counts of willful torture of an animal. The Reno Justice Court said Brown retained his own private counsel, attorney John Oakes, so his next hearing is scheduled for August 13 at 1:30pm.

An animal rights group planned on protesting outside the courthouse Monday, but cancelled their gathering until the next official hearing. The group believes Brown should not have a bail.

"He needs to stay there, at this point, we believe he's probably a danger to himself, probably to his family, definitely the community is very afraid," said Nevada Voters for Animals President Gina Greisen. "The fact that they took him off the website, it's sort of been like a frenzy, we get constant messages that he's out on bail."

The Reno Justice Court says Brown's bail is set at $70,000 cash only. A preliminary hearing has not been rescheduled yet.

This is ridiculous, make him pay the money and then release him. He is NOT a danger, he was clearly, from evidence found at the crime scene, off his head on drugs. I think that if mental health was more of a priority, you would see a drastic decline in incidents like this.

Again, how can you justify killing or maiming a human being for what they have done to a animal. I don't understand the logic! Does that mean those of us who hunt are damned to eternity?

Why are people willing to kill a human being over a animal. I don't get the logic!

Wow, and I thought I was the only guy that wants to torture and maim him. If I don't, I hope somebody does. He's safe while locked up. Inmates are not interested in getting him. It's not like the movies, folks.
