RENO, Nev. (AP) — A rural Nevada group is asking a federal judge to block the sale of oil and gas leases they say will be used for hydraulic fracturing and other development that poses a much greater threat to sage grouse and other wildlife than the U.S. government claims.

The Bureau of Land Management concluded in February any energy exploration resulting from the fracking would have little or no impact across about 270 square miles of central Nevada.

But the Reese River Basin Citizens Against Fracking says those assumptions are based on unrealistic expectations that the little interest shown in oil and gas in Nevada historically will continue. They said in a lawsuit filed in Reno last week the BLM is ignoring a recently discovered shale deposit that some say could become one of the nation's most valuable.

Paladin.....the BIG PICTURE is the fact that Peak Oil is a real fact, and making compromise after compromise with our environment and critical ground water supply is as stupid and pointless as building your boat while the flood waters are almost waist high...... We need the fortitude to make the decisions to INNOVATE technology that will free us completely from a withering resource! The BIG PICTURE is the fact that by the time Peak Oil hits in 40-50 years, we will be little-prepared as an Economy and technologically to fill that infrastructure gaping hole! Stop deluding yourself with thinking that we have the oil resources to support our nation within out lands. WE DO NOT. Even the International Energy Agency and Cambridge Energy Research Associates believe that we will see a peak, and a reduction into nothing within 50-60 years AT BEST. That is taking into account a MINIMIZED estimate on population growth around the world. We are allll addicted to oil, and our 'dealers' are going to be out of business soon.....are you going to wean yourself off, or die from the withdrawals?

Nice to see someone pandering to the low information voter set.It does not matter where this stuff is pumped from, if China will pay more for it,it goes to China and we still pay a high price. All fuel,no matter if it's oil or natural gas gets sold on the open market, period. All gas companies are multinationals and could careless if people in the USA are bled dry. They have other customers all over the world.

Would you whiners shut the frack up! As long as we are middle east dependant on oil we will never be free of that part of the world. We (the US)have the oil and natural gas reserves to be completely independant of the muslim extremists that currently sell us their oil. We just need to have the fortitude to make the decisions to obtain it. Look at the BIG PICTURE people! We could completely pull out of the middle east, never lose another American soldier's life to those extremists and just sit back and watch them exterminate each other, IF we were energy independant. That is the big picture, not a sage grouse.
