LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A Nevada assemblyman facing a charge of threatening incoming Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal he is innocent.

The newspaper reports Democratic Assemblyman Steven Brooks was shirtless during much of a Thursday interview, in which he told a reporter he was roughed up before and during his arrest last Saturday.

Brooks conceded to possessing a gun when he was arrested on a charge off threatening a public official. He accuses Kirkpatrick of trying to kill him and says he now has an armed guard to protect him.

Brooks is due in court Monday. The unfolding saga has other state lawmakers on edge as they prepare for the legislative session that begins Feb. 4.

According to police reports, family members expressed concern over his mental stability.
