RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- The local art scene is picking up speed, and everyone can be a part of the fun. A downtown Reno event is giving local artists mass exposure.
It's a Reno tradition, and it begins across the street from the state's only accredited art museum: The Nevada Museum of Art.
The venues for Reno's Arts District may surprise you. Now, those venues are giving local artists yet another way to make a living.
"Any city that has an active art environment, they have an art walk," said Rich Van Gogh from the Liberty Fine Arts Gallery. "It's a no brainer."
Art Walk Reno begins Thursday, and is open the first Thursday of every month. About 20 downtown venues will highlight over 40 local artists each time month.
Liberty Fine Arts Gallery is the first stop on the map this week. The venue displays work from 20 local artists on a regular basis. "That's the hardest thing for artists, to show their own work, to get a foot in the door," said Van Gogh.
A similar art walk ended three years ago, and the gallery expects this revived event to bring hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors to Reno each month. "The art scene is about to blow up here," said Curator Eric Brooks. "There's a lot of people in the past severl years who have been building on that."
Noble Pie Parlor may specializes in the culinary arts. While you eat, however, you get a lesson in local culture. The restaurant is part of the Art Walk route. "You can see a pointing, how it's going to be hanging over a kitchen table," said Brooks. "You can envision it easier how to hang paintings in your own home when you see them in a natural environment."
Outsiders Hair Studio hangs local art for two years running. "We just want to support this growing art community that is in Reno, because it's a cool thing and we want to be a part of it," said Owner Nellie Davis.
Canvas art and photography will be featured inside the salon Thursday. Outsiders lets artists sell their work through the business free of charge.
The event begins at 6 p.m., and costs $10 per person. This admission fee gets you a ticket and program, and a drinking glass. The glass gets you discounts on food and drinks from different venues along the Art Walk path.
