From the Ask Joe File a follow up tonight to a story from last year on a jail escape in Storey County.
Jimmy Carr wrote asking about the results of the Storey County Sheriff's Office investigation into Jeremy Morales' escape from the jail last year. He says the public hasn't heard anything about this story since the prisoner was captured. This was a very high profile story when it happened last fall.
Just to refresh your memory Jeremy Morales escaped from the Storey County Jail back on October 1st 2012. That was the day he was scheduled to be sentenced on a sexual assault charge.
Morales got out, fled into the hills and hid out for two weeks before he was finally found. I talked to Sheriff Gerald Antinoro about the case. Antinoro says their investigation found Morales was able to get out because four separate locks were -not- locked that day. One was broken, the other three were left unlocked accidentally by the jailers.
Antinoro says he fired the two deputies who were involved. He wouldn't give me their names but he says they are fighting that decision and the issue is currently before an arbitrator. Antinoro says he is frustrated that the issue is still not resolved.
Again, four locks left unlocked made it pretty easy for Morales to escape from jail. Antinoro says he's confident it won't happen again.
Morales is now serving life in prison with an extra one to five years tacked on for the escape.
