From the Ask Joe file a question from a viewer about hospital care for victims of serious accidents and shootings.
Gene in Carson City wrote in asking why most Carson City accident victims are routinely transferred to Renown in Reno instead of Carson-Tahoe Medical Center? Gene points out after the recent shooting at Carson-Tahoe the patient was transferred to Renown. Gene wants to know if this practice makes any sense ?
As Gene points out the most recent example of this practice occurred last month when William Dresser shot his wife in her hospital bed at Carson-Tahoe Medical Center claiming he was attempting to carry out a mercy killing.
Francis Dresser was transferred from Carson-Tahoe to Renown for treatment where she later died from her injuries.
I checked with Jon Tyler at Carson-Tahoe Medical Center . He told me there are certain circumstances that require a transfer from Carson-Tahoe to another hospital.
Those can include trauma such as a gunshot wound, brain surgery or stroke as well as pediatric intensive care.
In cases like that patients do get transferred to Renown which is a level two trauma center and better equipped to handle those cases.
In some cases, as with burn victims, the patient may need to be transferred to an even more specialized provider.
