Question:
Vic and Lynne Morin wote in  saying they've noticed a small Lear Jet type aircraft circling around Reno this week at a relatively low altitude.  Vic and Lynne live in Somersett and they say they've witnessed the plane making many passes over the area.  They're wondering what it's up to?

Answer:
I checked with Heidi Jared at the Reno-Tahoe Airport..
She checked with the air traffic control tower and confirmed this is an FAA aircraft performing routine flight checks of navigational equipment at the Reno-Stead Airport.

I also checked with Ian Gregor with the FAA.
He says crew members fly overhead and use on-board computers to monitor signals the plane is receiving from the airport's navigational systems.   Gregor says this is a good way to check on any of the navigational equipment that has undergone repairs or been moved or replaced.  It is a good way to make sure it is all working properly so  that pilots always have the best systems in place to help them navigate take-offs and landings.
