Ida Peska wrote in saying she was pleased to discover she could pay her property taxes on line. However she was told there would be a charge which in her case was $14.54. Ida wants to know how they were able to put this charge in place and also-- what its for ?
I talked to Francis Finch in the Washoe County Treasurers Office today. She told me they do charge a fee for on-line credit card transactions. It works out to about two and a half percent of the total transaction.
Credit card companies often use a third party to collect payments and that 2 1/2 percent is what they charge for the service. Finch says most businesses simply incorporate that fee into their prices and pass it on the to the consumer. The county can't raise prices so they bill the fee separately.
Now there are options which do not come with a fee.
You can pay through your checking account on-line by entering your bank and routing number. There is no fee to pay your taxes that way.
More and more and people are choosing to pay their property taxes on line and the treasurer's office says these days about 80 percent use a direct payment from their checking account, the rest use their credit card.
Also... You always have the option of paying in person at the Washoe County Treasurer's Office over on 9th Street.
