From the Ask Joe file one of our viewers has a question tonight about the two prison inmates who escaped from a work detail in northwest Reno recently..and were later recaptured.
The viewer wrote in saying perhaps you could ask the Nevada Department of Corrections how an inmate with a conviction for resisting an officer with a weapon is classified as minimum security and allowed on a work crew ?
The viewer asked that we not use his name so we will protect his identity.
I checked with the Nevada Department of Corrections about this. Two inmates escaped last week, on January 8th, 2013. Corey Gomez and Dustin Cottiero walked away while working up near Robb Drive.
I asked prison officials about this and they confirmed that Gomez was convicted of burglary and resisting a public officer with a weapon. So our viewer is correct.
Why was Gomez on the work crew ? The Department of Corrections says both inmates were classified as minimum security. There are a number of factors they look at, including no serious violent disciplinary infraction in the past twelve months, and no conviction of crimes involving the use of force in the past twelve months. So presumably Gomez was convicted of the crime involving a weapon more than a year ago and that would allow him to qualify as minimum security.
