RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- In the wake of the Washoe County School district controversy, Assembly Minority Leader Pat Hickey is calling for the 2015 Nevada Legislature to consider certain changes regarding County School Boards.

Hickey is requesting the Legislative Counsel Bureau to draft a bill that will look at a possible blended or hybrid system of elected and appointed School Board Members. Hickey also said he's been asked by several Northern Nevadan leaders to consider this bill draft request.

The draft request calls to "make various changes concerning the board of trustees of school districts, including providing for election and appointment of members and revising their powers."

The Nevada Legislature is no more qualified to govern the actions of local school boards than anyone else. Legislative actions will set future mistakes in concrete. The control of local school boards should remain where it is now; with the local citizens. The responsibility for the WCSD rests solely on the shoulders of the Washoe County electorate.

Not sure legislative intervention is the right course of action. There are already remedies to take care of the lack of leadership and lawlessness of the Board of Trustees. In this case, the community shareholders exerted their influence and forced into the light improper actions by the Trustees. There isn't a need to have the legislature play nanny when the problem can be taken care of by right-minded community members. The community can, and I hope will, continue to pursue remedies to this out-of-control Board of Trustees by pushing forward with a recall effort. I know it's important for politicians to jump on board with hot-button items but we simply don't need more legislative babysitting.
