RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- When you're out of town for the holidays, or even just at work for the day, theives know they can find extra valuables under your tree. So we put together a few tips for how you can avoid being an easy target.
"People who are potential burglars, they know if they see a Christmas tree, presents are under those Christmas trees," Washoe County Sheriff's Office Deputy Armando Avina said. "Many people still to this day are not locking their houses."
Tip number one is the easiest and most important: lock your doors, windows and vehicle.
"We also recommend if there's one lock on the door add an additional one," Avina said.
If you want to see where your home is vulnerable - think like a burglar.
"Step in front of your house," Avina said. "Look through your windows. If you can see the valuables, so can potential burglars."
Dark houses can be a target, so if you're headed out of town for a few days try to make it look like you're at home.
"Leave some lights on," Avida said. "It's always nice to maybe play some music so it sounds like somebody's home."
Resist the urge to post on sites like Twitter, Facebook and FourSquare that you're going out of town.
"Don't post personal information on social networking sites because that's what people are looking for," Avina said. "You'll become a target if you're letting people know that you're not at home."
Avina says these criminals are often good at lurking around in the dark, so if you see something strange, say something.
"Continue to call in suspicious circumstances, suspicious suspects in your neighborhood," Avina said.
If you have presents in the car, make sure they're out of sight. Put them in the trunk, or if you have an SUV make sure the shade in the back is closed.
