RENO, Nev. (KRNV & — A black bear was successfully released this morning around 8:30 near the area where it was caught, the Gold Ranch area of Verdi.

Nevada Department of Wildlife game wardens also fired two rubber shotgun slugs into the rear area of the bear as it fled.

Soon after the morning release near Verdi, NDOW says another trap set near the Glenbrook area of South Lake Tahoe had captured a bear in the early hours of this morning. The bear was a three year old male, captured previously two years ago.

Persons needing to report nuisance bear activity can call the NDOW’s Bear Hotline telephone number at (775) 688-BEAR (2327). For information on living with bears persons can go to and find the ”Bear Logic” page on the website.

This is excellent news. This is also very new for the department to do this. Last year, the department killed every bear in Incline Village that did property damage or wandered around in daylight hours. Does this mean that NDoW is changing their policy for an automatic third strike once property damage is done? It would be nice if the department would bring members of the general public along to see the release. This might go along way in gaining trust back with the public. Two weeks ago, CA Fish and Wildlife invited members of the general public when they released a research bear.
