RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) - A big game-changer today for the 2014 Reno mayoral election. Current Reno mayor Bob Cashell has endorsed a candidate. Reno civil engineer Ray Pezonella is now being supported by the mayor to take over his job next year. Cashell initially wasn't going to endorse any of the original 20 candidates, but had a change of heart.
“I think that it’s my obligation as the mayor of this city, to step forward,” said Cashell. “And this morning, I am pleased to announce that I’m endorsing Ray Pezonella to be our next mayor."
Cashell decided to step up and support who he thinks should be his successor.
“But as we get down to the wire and after talking to many citizens, and restaurants, and places around town, they encouraged me to endorse somebody for mayor,” said Cashell.
Cashell believes Pezonella understands what it takes to be mayor.
“Ray has committed his life to the Lions Club, to 4-H, to kids and businesses, said Cashell. “And he's been a real business leader in the community and he has a lot more experience in the business world than some of the other people do."
And Cashell also believes some of the other candidates aren't committed enough to be mayor.
“A lot of them, I didn't see them willing to take the hours and times that it needs to be mayor,” said Cashell. “Because you're mayor on Saturday and Sunday, and every day of the week."
Pezonella says getting this endorsement is an honor. He believes his hard work will help separate him from the rest of candidates.
“The kinds of things that I’ve been trying to get across to the continuance of all the city of Reno, that now at least the leaders are realizing that I am the person to take over this city and do the right things for this city,” said Pezonella.
The mayor's endorsement comes just in time for early voting for the primary, which begins on Saturday.
