GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Two Douglas County Park Maintenance workers made a grim discovery on Monday. They found the body of a young man in a shallow pool of water at Lampe Park.
Although they have ruled out foul play, investigators are asking for help on this case. They believe drowning is the cause of death, but they also believe that is only a portion of this story and they hope someone will come forward with more answers.
Lampe Park is located on the south side of Gardnerville. It is a family park where geese and ducks gather, birthday celebrations occur and more, according to Douglas County Sargeant Pat Brooks. "It's where our fishing tournament, you know, the kids fishing tournament is during the summer months."
So it was quite a surprise when two county workers came upon the body of 24-year-old William Sheerin of Gardnerville.
"He didn't have any clothes on his upper torso and he was kneeling down in the ditch face down," revealed Brooks.
Investigators believe he rode his bike to the park after making a stop at a store. "Why he was there, I'm not sure," said Brooks. "But we did find some receipts from in his pocket that indicated he had purchased some alcohol from a local store nearby, and he was out there, and we found an empty bottle out there."
Sheerin was a 2008 graduate of Douglas High, where in addition to playing football, he was also on the track team.
Authorities want to talk with anyone who came in contact with Sheerin within the past 48 hours. "We don't have any information other than he purchased alcohol last night," said Brooks. "What kind of mind frame was he in? We don't know that and that would help us in this investigation."
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is awaiting toxicology results to determine an official cause of death. If you have any information, you are asked to call the Douglas County Sheriff's Office at 775-782-9905.
