RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - On Monday, January 9th, 2012, Explosives Ordnance Disposal Technicians of the Tahoe-Douglas Bomb Squad were called to investigate unexploded ordnance left outside of a retail gun store in downtown Gardnerville.
The owner of the store discovered the ordnance sitting outside the rear of his shop when he opened for business on Monday morning, January 9th, 2012. The ordnance had been deposited at the location overnight by an unknown person.
EOD Technicians John Preston and Jeff Schemenauer responded to the location and examined the ordnance, consisting of unexploded gas canisters, grenade simulators, and an 81mm smoke mortar round.
The ordnance was inspected, rendered safe, and transported to the Douglas County Shooting Range, where it was disposed of via controlled detonation.
Citizens are reminded that disposing of ordnance by merely dropping items off at a particular location poses a serious safety hazard to others, and is illegal. While most firearm retailers are, by the nature of their trade, knowledgeable in ordnance and ballistics, they normally do not have the means to dispose of UXO. Fortunately in this incident, the items were safely collected and destroyed by capable EOD personnel.
