CARSON CITY, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Nevada's troubled health care exchange has a new boss. Bruce Gilbert is now serving as Executive Director for the Silver State Exchange.
Gilbert is from Texas. He is an attorney who has spent the past 20 years working in the insurance industry. He said he is well aware of the challenges facing Nevada's Silver State Exchange. "That is not unknown to me, but I recognize and understand those problems need to be dealt with and we will be addressing them over the next several months."
Gilbert will be the third person, including an interim, to serve as Executive Director since Nevada's exchange was created under the Affordable Care Act. Gilbert said over the next 90 days, he will focus on two major priorities. One is addressing the customer service and delivery issues that have plagued the exchange.
This includes addressing the backlog of people who have paid for health care coverage, but still do not have it. "In my first meeting with the board, one of the things that I indicated was that we would be adding additional staff, specifically to deal with those types of problems," said Gilbert.
Another big challenge is fixing Nevada's website, which is used to sign up for health care coverage. The exchange is in the process of transitioning the Nevada site over to the federal website. "Things are going very well. We're meeting our milestones and hitting our deadlines. We're paying very close attention to that and our expectation is that there will be a better experience for customers this time out."
The second round of open enrollment to sign up for health care coverage under the Affordable Health Care Act is November. Gilbert anticipates the website will be up and running by then.
