CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Republicans who want to close a campaign finance loophole that allows some former elected officials to hold onto campaign cash present their bill Thursday, a day after being blindsided by a complaint alleging violations by a former Republican Assembly leader.
AB178 requires anyone who qualifies as a candidate to dispose of unused campaign funds within two years if they don't actually file as a contender or appear on the ballot.
It's motivated by former Democratic Speaker Barbara Buckley, who termed out in 2010 and left office with $575,000 in campaign funds, money used to help Democrats in last year's election.
On Wednesday, a Democratic leader alleged former GOP Assemblywoman Heidi Gansert held on to more than $100,000 in unused funds before for disposing of them improperly.
