Churchill County, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com)-- A carjacking lead into a high speed rollover.
According to Churchill County Sheriff Ben Trotter, the carjacking occured just before 8 a.m. on November 24th, when an elderly coupled pulled over to help a vehicle that had crashed near I-80 Mile Marker 77 in Churchill County. The crashed vehicle was later identified by police as a 1985 Toyota pickup that had been stolen in Rancho Cordoba, California.
The suspect with the crashed, stolen pickup then overpowered the elderly victims and stole their Lincoln sedan, driving it east on I-80. His escape ended when the suspect crashed the stolen sedan near Marker 190 on I-80 in Humbolt County. According to officials with NHP, the escaping suspect had been driving over 120 mph and tried to pass two semis when he rolled the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.
NHP has identified the suspect as D. Singer McKenzie.
The vehicle caught fire in the crash and was badly burned, the suspect was eventually captured and taken into custody.
The crashes and related charges will be handled and investigated by NHP, but the carjacking, stolen vehicle and possible battery will be investigated by the Churchill County Sheriff's Office.
