ELKO, Nev. (AP) — A preliminary hearing is under way in Elko County District Court for a 22-year-old man suspected of killing his mother and injuring his half-brother in a shooting at their home in Carlin.

Brant Davis faces charges of open murder and attempted murder in the March 11 shooting that killed 52-year-old Teresa Black and injured 19-year-old Taylor "TJ" Black.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports Taylor Black testified on Thursday that he survived by playing dead after Davis shot him in the neck and hand.

He says he could hear Davis having a confusing conversation with himself, questioning why he had shot the two and then saying, "They wanted this."

Black says he thinks there's "two people living inside" Davis' head.

The hearing is expected to wrap up Friday.
