(MyNews4.com & KRNV) Carson City, Nev. -- Carson City residents are closer to seeing a new, modernized library in their town. The Carson City Center Project Citizens’ Committee voted 8-1 on Monday to move forward with the plan.

The library was proposed in 2009 by the Mae B. Adams Trust who owns the Carson Nugget. They will be working with the city on a $49.6 million dollar city center project.

About $25.7 million dollars will be covered by private and federal sources. The remainder will come from the city’s redevelopment funds - $11.3 million, the City Utility Fund - $500,000 and a sales tax increase of 1/8-cent - $12 million.

Sara Jones the library director at the Carson City Library said the sales tax increase will last for about 30 years.

“The first thing to say is how modest it really is for an average person. It is $5 a year, which is the cost of a caramel macchiato at Starbucks,” she said.

Jones said the proposed library will be called the Knowledge and Discovery Center. It will not only include books, but an auditorium, art gallery, kids’ area and a computer center. A parking garage as well as a plaza will be built. Jones said an ice rink will be included in the winter.

It will be built on three acres of land donated by the Mae B. Adams Trust behind the Carson Nugget.

“We’re going to take our capital city and we’re going to re-create its core and make it exciting,” said Jones.

Doors could open for the Knowledge and Discovery Center as early as 2014.

The Mae B. Adams Trust donated six acres of land for this project. Jones said the other three acres will potentially be converted into hotels or loft spaces.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will meet in September to further discuss this project.
