Community events to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

RENO, Nev. (KRNV&MyNews4.com) --The Reno-Sparks community is celebrating civil rights leader, activist, clergyman, noble peace prize winner, Martin Luther King, Jr. in a series of events Monday.

The Second Baptist Church in Reno kicked-off the celebration Sunday with the 27th annual interfaith community memorial service themed "Moving Forward with the Dream."

"When we begin to take on the idea of serving one another and we actually become more forward thinking, because the better we can pay it forward, help someone else the more we can become the type of society that blends better and takes care of one another," Second Baptist Church Pastor Michael Randle says.

Pastor Randle says honoring the late Martin Luther King, Jr. is always significant. He believes as a society we need to remember all that King stood for, equal rights for all man.

On Monday, the 15th annual caravan on Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Highway is set to start at 10:30 a.m. The caravan will begin at Second Baptist Church on 1265 Montello St. in Reno. The caravan will head north on Interstate-580 and get off at Stead Boulevard, then head south on I-580 to Neil Road, then back to the church. Everyone in the community is invited to join the motorcade.

The Northern Nevada Food Bank, is honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. by offering volunteer sessions from 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 4 p.m. and 5:30 to 8 pm Monday. Food bank is located at

The 25th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Dinner celebration will be held by the Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society at John Ascuaga's Nugget. The cocktail reception starts at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner begins at 7 p.m. Tickets for the program cost $55. The guest speaker will be Krish Dhanam, internationally known motivational, business, and leadership operator. Guest performance by local singer Whitney Myer.
