RENO, Nev. (Mynews4.com & KRNV) - January 19th will mark one year since the Washoe Drive Fire, but there seems to be complications in the investigation. Washoe County Sheriff's Office met with the District Attorney's office Wednesday January 9, 2012 to discuss the latest information.
According to District Attorney Richard Gammick, they are not looking into any criminal case at this time regarding the fire because no report has ever been submitted to his office. Gammick says there was an understanding that the Reno Fire Department along with Washoe County Sheriff's Office would sub mitt a joint report, but that has not happened. Even though a report was completed by the fire department in April of 2012.
"I can't say anything about the fire department because we have had no information from them. I know a report was done, I do not know if the report was done or if that is a finished report and it was never given to the Sheriff's department," said Gammick.
Meanwhile, victims of the fire are still waiting to find out if there will be any charges against the person who allegedly started the fire. According to the fire department's report a man did admit to accidentally starting the fire. He reportedly told investigators he thought the ashes he threw away were cold enough they would not start a fire. No recommendations were made in the report.
Jeannie Watts and her family not only lost their home, barn and horses but Jeannie's mother as well. "I just want him to be responsible for doing what he did and help out the people who have lost the most. My life will never ever be the same," said Jeannie. Originally the Watts' family did not want to see the man face charges but they have since changed their mind. They say he should incur some financial responsibility or community service for all of the victims.
News 4 contacted Fire Marshall Dave Cochran about what District Attorney Gammick has said. Cochran would not go on camera but says their report is complete and they were never asked for more.
A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office was not available but have agreed to speak to News 4 on Friday.
