RENO, Nev. ( & KRNV) -- Washoe County Commission members made headway on Tuesday towards bringing medical marijuana dispensaries to the county.

Commissioners unanimously passed an ordinance that will allow dispensaries to open in certain commercial areas. It was also decided that the dispensaries can be open for business from 6 a.m until 8 p.m., as to not put a strain on Reno Police or Washoe County Sheriff's deputies.

The ordinance also addressed the criminal code. "What the ordinance did was it amended some of our criminal code chapters to fall in line with state law," said Bob Webb from the Washoe County Community Services Department. "So, it's illegal to posses marijuana unless you fall under the state law of provisions for medical marijuana: patient, have a card, or a caregiver. Have a card: you're allowed a certain amount of marijuana. So now our county codes refer to our state law, so that we are in line with state law."

The ordinances passed on Tuesday only pertain to areas of Washoe County that are unincorporated. Washoe County is currently on track with the state's schedule to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to open their doors when the state process is complete.

Nevada is staking a step forward on the Mary Jane issue for sure. But, the State needs to decriminalize its use. The Drug War is lost! Billion went out the window for no good reason. We DO NOT need more people in jail for simple possession. Nevada needs to get in step with polls which people favor legalizing pot by over 50%.

How would the dispensaries put a strain on the police and sheriff's dept ? Their certainly not going to stand there intimidating people by checking id's on the tax payers dime. Either it's legal or it isn't.
